Gusto Foods South Perth

Located on busy Angelo Street in South Perth, Gusto foods is creating a name for itself with unique and visually stunning breakfasts. On weekends you will see lines out the door and a packed cafe with a mixture of breakfast dates, catch ups, young family’s and people enjoying their coffee while reading the paper and watching the world go by. Gusto is a local for us, and it has been interesting to watch it’s following grow from humble beginnings a few initial teething problems. On our first visit quite soon after it opened we never intended to come back, the coffee was awful (over extracted, milk proteins had actually broken down and undrinkable) and the food while interesting, was just not hitting the mark, we weren’t sure we even enjoyed it. But – we came back with friends and subsequently since and are so glad that we gave them another try. To their absolute credit the food has been fantastic, flavour combinations that really work, breakfasts that look and taste amazing, and their coffee (while …

Ciao Italia, finally we say hello.

With massive lines out the door on any given day of the week, Ciao Italia is a must for any fan of Italian food, generous servings and good prices. Knowing there would be lines we went on a Tuesday night at 5.45pm, convinced that we wouldn’t have to wait. We were wrong, already there was a 20 minute wait and the restaurant was bustling with activity. When we were seated inside we were met with red checked tablecloths, smiling faces of the serving staff and the delicious smell of good cooking.  The restaurant was noisy and packed but it felt more like a meal at home with background noise, and was to be expected for such a busy place. We were served fairly promptly, and had a refreshing citron pressed from Margaret river, beautifully tart. We started with garlic bread, the smell was intoxicating, and you could smell the garlic before it arrived at your table.  When it arrived it was perfect, crunchy, buttery, garlic-y goodness! They did not disappoint! We were a little optimistic in ordering …

Heavenly Halo Espresso

Halo Espresso is our local, we love their coffees, weekend breakfasts and now their fanastic selection of raw treats! The raw food movement seems to have popped up in Cafe’s everywhere lately, in a nutshell raw food is about eating raw food in an unprocessed state. The food is not heated or cooked in order to preserve it’s nutritional value and it is usually vegan. I don’t claim to be a raw foodie, but I do enjoy having the option for a healthy and delicious treat, and the sheer popularity of the range at Halo suggested there’s plenty of others who do to. So what exactly do these treats entail? I’ve tried a selection, most raw desserts involve the use of nuts and dates, coconut, coconut oil and cacao, as well as other ingredients like them, to mimic what you’d generally find in a cafe display. What you can see below is the Rawsome caRAWmel slice. The slice is chocolate-y, gooey and delicious. The base is nutty, with a date caramel layer, and chocolate and walnut …

Sunday Morning

Gusto deliciousness to start my Sunday. I have been dying to have the pulled pork eggs benedict for some time now and was thrilled to see it on the menu this morning. It did not disappoint – The pork was fantastic, it melted in your mouth as any good pulled pork should. The eggs were soft poached to perfection, and there’s a definite sense of satisfaction in slicing open the yolk to ooze out and mingle with the sauce. I got an iced chocolate on a whim, and it was equally satisfying. I haven’t had any luck with the coffee at Gusto so luckily their other beverages don’t disappoint. I can assure you it tasted as good as it looked. My only advice? Get there early to avoid a massive line. Check out @frenchtoastandindiepop on Instagram!
