Flora and Fauna / Northbridge

On our recent return to Perth we checked out the tiny little cafe, Flora and Fauna. When we say little we really do mean it, this cafe is seriously tiny with seating space located in the Northbirdge arcade. Flora and Fauna is designed to be cute and charming it’s definitely achieved that. It’s the mismatched chairs, flowers and vintage decorations that have obviously be combined with care. But consider yourself warned, because there’s such a small amount of tables the staff are very vigilant in ensuring you’re sitting in the appropriate one. It can be a bit off putting, especially if you’re sitting at the right table but waiting for friends. The menu at Flora and Fauna vegan and vegetarian, with mostly healthy and some sweet eats. You’ll need to place an order at the counter and your meal will be brought out to you. We started with a light and fresh strawberry sunshine juice, and a decent but not otherwise particularly memorable latte. Our meals came soon after, and it was obvious they were …

Lucky Chans Laundry and Noodlebar / Northbridge

We love the kickstarter food movement. There’s some great ideas we’d love to get on board with and kickstarter gives us a chance to be a small part of it. Lucky Chans Laundry and Noodle Bar were one such Kickstarter campaign we threw our support behind before moving to Melbourne. We were disappointed we didn’t get to try it before we left and made it one of must visits on our return!  Lucky Chans has an awesome marketing strategy behind it – we loved the #whoisluckychan social media movement. A quick search of the hashtag will show you it’s still successful now they’ve opened, there’s something about the intrigue of it all that pulls you in.  The set up inside is intimate with a clutter of decor. We especially loved the wall of ironing boards leading up to the rooftop garden. ‘Noodle bar and Laundry’ aren’t just words, they really committed to the theme and went all out.   We were seated comfortably and quickly and soon had a menu to peruse and drinks on their …

Dinner and a Show: Ellington Jazz Club

What better past time then listening to music, and what better to do while listen to music then to enjoy a meal? With that in mind we headed to the Ellington Jazz Club, Perth’s premier jazz venue to watch the Darling Buds of May! The Darling Buds of May are a swing sextet, headed by the effervescent Jessie Gordon. They are a tightly honed group who love what they do, dancing, swinging, and laughing with the crowd. As someone who’s not that into jazz, they made it an experience that we could appreciate. The St Louis Blues were a definite stand out while the foray into improv metal and blues was surprisingly wonderful, the Latin a little less so. Each of the musicians had their chance to demonstrate their skill and versatility with lively and passionate solos that made the crowd light up.  With all the clamour going on the waitstaff made navigating the tight tables and dark room seem easy. We were shoulder to shoulder but only really felt crowded when the music wasn’t …

Urbanistar: Bookshop and Cafe

Wanting a quick breakfast before work in the CBD, we headed to William St in Northbridge where a favourite cafe our loved ones is located. Here you’ll find Urbanistar, a bookshop and cafe in one. The tables are outside, though you’ll need to make your way through the bookshop to order. Make sure you bring cash or are prepared to walk to an ATM, as you’ll only be able to pay in cash which can be quite an inconvenience! Urbanistar serve a rich and strong coffee with creamy milk. There wasn’t much of an attempt at latte art though. The meals here are light so we went for a blt bagel. This was a good light meal, the bagel had plenty of filling and a delicious tomato relish. We also tried a cream cheese bagel. Simple, nicely toasted and served with a good amount of cream cheese that we could serve ourselves.  Urbanistar is a lovely bookstore serving nice coffee and nice food. Being a fan of both bookstores and coffee, this was all we …

Babooshka Brunching

Tucked at the end of an arcade in Northbridge off William St, you’ll find this wonderful, small cafe that really packs a punch. Babooshka is still a new inclusion to the Perth food and coffee scene and boasts tables inside and out with a wonderfully airy back seating area. The service was okay, friendly and relaxed but not super prompt. You’ll need to order and pay at the counter but your food will appear at your table after that. What we really came here for though was the coffee! Babooshka are repping the Blacklist Coffee Roasters (another name for the boys at our local favourite, Sprolo) forte blend. This is a rich, and strong coffee, complex and full bodied, one of those coffees that makes you happy, and passed our second coffee test with flying colours! Not only do they serve excellent coffee but also have a small menu of brunch dishes. We chose the Boston Beans for our savoury dish. It looked a bit oily when it arrived but was perfect when mixed through. …

The Old Crow Dinner

We’ve previously enjoyed a lovely breakfast at The Old Crow and when looking for somewhere to go for a night out in Northbridge it was once again at the top of our list. The Old Crow was busy though not overly so, despite it being a Saturday night, and we were able to get a table inside. The menu allows you to order a meal for yourself or to have it tapas style and share amongst the table. Always a fan of tapas, we elected to share! We found the service to be prompt but a bit rushed. The staff were cordial but hassled so didn’t necessarily have the warmth that we had experienced at breakfast there. We started with complimentary sourdough, fresh and delicious, served with a fennel butter. Always a fan of crispy pork, our next choice was the crispy pork bits. This was a really strange dish, not the kind of crispy we expected. It tasted more like a sweet and sour, a mix of crispy and chewy that we weren’t really …

Superstar Waffles

We’ve been craving waffles for some time, and Superstar Waffles has been taunting us with their delicious menu. Though if you look on Urbanspoon you’ll see they are open for ‘breakfast’, we don’t consider it to really be breakfast if it’s opening time is 1pm. You’ll find Superstar waffles down a laneway off William Street. It’s in the midst of other cool places, Francoforte Spaghetti bar, the newly opened Babooshka and hipster bar, Ezra Pound. Our first selection was the S’mores waffles, their take on the choc marshmallow treat. We added ice cream for a little extra. The waffles was nicely done with some crispness to it, and the marshmallow was fantastic. A great sweet treat. We’re rather fond of banoffe and it was an easy choice off the menu. The bananas were nice and ripe and had lots of flavour. We added ice cream to this too, which was a good addition but there really wasn’t enough toffee to bring it all together. If there’s going to be toffee, you really need to be …

Yum Cha at New Moon, Northbridge

What greater weekend ritual is there than having yum cha with friends and family? If you haven’t partaken of this delectable asian delight, you have surely been missing out. Though we do yum cha fairly regularly I haven’t yet introduced you to our favourite, New Moon in Northbridge. There’s plenty of places to get yum cha in Northbridge but New Moon really stands out. From when they open there are queues of people waiting patiently to get their fix. When you get inside you’ll find the staff to be friendly and efficient, well equipped to deal with the masses of diners but still able to remember you amongst the crowd if you’re a regular. There’s far too much for me to go through everything you can enjoy at New Moon so here’s just an example of some of the things we enjoy. We absolutely adore their prawn dishes, they’re always so fresh and full of flavour. The pork buns too are that mix of sticky sweet, soft bun and steaming filling. Our all time favourite, …

Nunam (Previously Nahm Thai) New Breakfast Menu

Nahm Thai, or Nunam as it is now to be known, on Bulwer street in Northbridge has just started doing breakfasts. They’re widely known for their excellent Thai meals and it was about time we got to try something just a little bit different for breakfast. The interior is just wonderful, it’s got all the sophistication and flair they bring to the dinner table and it feels even more so with early morning eyes. They were easily able to seat the six of us and we were provided with menus and water promptly. We were happy to chat amongst ourselves and take time to make up our minds for our meals which worked out well as it was a little while before our orders were taken. The menu is a really interesting Asian take on breakfast with some more traditional options as well, there’s things for the more bold souls and those who play it safe. We went for a bit of both! Our lattes were nice and creamy though a hit hot initially. The …

La Cholita Bites in Northbridge

We visited La Cholita in Northbridge for some casual dinner. The atmosphere is warm and cozy on a cold night. The staff really went out of their way to provide us with great service when seating us. I’ve still been struggling with a bad back and need to sit on a chair that has lower back support, no stools allowed. Despite there only being tables with stools left they were happy to find to me a suitable chair and move it to the table in no time at all. In our experience its rare to find such service, and even better it was with a smile. The bar is really impressive at La Cholita, but we were more interested in their food on this occasion. We just selected things on the menu that sounded good and they came out as ready. A true test of Mexican food, the guacamole was the first thing to come to the table. It was very fresh with beautiful flavours and creamy avocado. What really blew us away though was …
