Shamble Coffee Brewers / Melbourne CBD

Melbourne CBD coffee options are constantly evolving. Once upon a time, there were the odd breakfast locations, like Hardware Societe or White Mojo, which had amazing coffee but were often so busy it was impossible to get a speedy takeaway. Recently however, there has been a rise in “coffee only” cafes around town. They are often quite small, and generally only operate Monday to Friday, offering little more than pastries and sweets. But their coffee is spectacular, and the people brewing the coffee have a real passion for their craft and the people that come in on a regular basis. Every street you walk down, you’re bound to find some of these cafes springing up. Having changed roles, and moving from the Lonsdale Street side of town to the Collins Street end, it’s opened up a world of opportunity in terms of these smaller coffee joints. Wandering up Little Collins Street, I came across a cafe. Not that I knew what it was called, only seeing a generic “Coffee” sign. Inside, the Spartan concrete flooring …

Trunk Diner / Melbourne CBD

The American inspired Trunk Diner is a charming all day diner up the Exhibition street end of the CBD. Fresh from our New York odessy, an American breakfast sounded like just the thing. There is both indoor and outdoor dining space, the indoor is small but comfortable. The wrap round windows give it a feeling of space and connection with the outside world. It’s almost hard to believe you’re in the heart of the city. We started our meal with coffee, it had a lovely creaminess with sweet honey notes to finish. Our first dish was the El Gringo. A Mexican inspired breakfast with chorizo and sweet corn chimichanga’s, refried beans, queso and fried eggs. The chimichanga was an absolute winner and perfectly fried, we would have liked more bulk to the dish though, more refried beans to act as a carrier. If you’re going to go for a Mexican breakfast, instead of all the heuvos rancheros going round, why not try this? We’re always in the mood for a eggs benedict, so our next …

Sam Sam / Melbourne CBD

Fried chicken is an obsession of mine: Korean fried chicken definitely fits the bill. Sam Sam is recently opened, in the heart of the CBD on Bourke street. I visited with an equally fried chicken obsessed friend for a feed! The venue is narrow but modern, making most of the space with close tables and stools. You’ll need to wait to be seated but there is table service. The space can be a bit chaotic and the staff can find themselves distracted or overrun. We ordered the kimchi fries and chicken, not given an indication of how it would be served, we were expecting it to come out as ready.  We chose to share the Loaded Kimchi Fries, served with cheese sauce, sour cream, chilli, crispy pork belly and of course – kimchi! The flavours were delicious, a great combination, but we really wanted more of the fillings throughout. While we were expecting crispy pork belly in big chunks, it was actually smaller pieces, more like bacon bits, hidden inside. We ended up ordering another side …

Rustica Canteen / Melbourne CBD

There’s so many wonderful lane way hideaways in Melbourne, some are harder to find than others but the journey of discovery is usually half the fun. Rustica Canteen is no exception. It’s one of the more hidden examples, down Guildford Lane and close by to Krimper and Shortstop Coffee and Donuts. While it’s exterior is unassuming, it hides something pretty special inside.    You might find yourself drawn to the impressive display of pastries, but trust us, resist, take a seat and give the breakfast menu a try. You won’t regret it!  Rustica Canteen has a comfortable and relaxed feel about it. It’s light and airy, using nature to decorate the space and complementing it with wooden furniture and fixtures. We started our meal with coffees. Our lattes had a beautiful mouthfeel, creamy texture and a rich flavour. Rustica is clearly somewhere that knows and appreciates a good brew. Our first choice from the menu was the Chilli Scrambled Eggs. The eggs were creamy and delicious, with a strong hit of spice. The addition of bacon had …

Doughnut Time / Melbourne CBD

Doughnut Time. Yes it’s another doughnut venue, and no, there can never be too many; Melbourne has room for all the doughnuts. In fact, the more the better! Doughnut Time is an unusual franchise because unlike the standalone stores of Shortstop Coffee and Donuts and newly reopened Doughboys Doughnuts this is just a hole in the wall that does doughnuts.  Your very own Doughnut ATM! After opening pop ups in the Top Shop at Emporium and the Glue Store in Highpoint, they’ve now got their very own store on Degraves Street. We sent a special envoy on their very first day to “do the rounds”. Or simply put, we went and got a couple o’ doughnuts, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, for research purposes of course.  The original glaze (OG, as it has ALWAYS stood for) is the most efficient test of a doughnut shop’s capabilities.  We found Doughnut Time’s original glaze to have a firmer density than other doughnuts we’ve tried, lacking the soft airiness that comes with such examples as those from All Day Donuts …

Doughboys Doughnuts / Melbourne CBD

Melbourne is a city that’s obsessed with doughnuts, but even so there’s only a few who turn this humble sweet treat into an art form. Doughboys is one of these artisanal doughnut makers you can find in the CBD. We’ve been in love with their treats since visiting their Queen Victoria Market location and devastation is an understatement of our feelings when they closed up shop! We were thrilled when they opened up the new city store, their donuts finally having pride of place in a space they deserved. We grabbed our sweet rings of joy to go, there is a small dining area but the line to order tends to fill up the entire space.  We chose a couple of doughnuts from the days selection, an Almond Butter and a Strawberry Creme. What struck us about both was the freshness, the intensity of the flavour and the lightness of the dough. The light crunch of the almond and the creamy icing, as well as the bright, and vibrant fresh strawberry glaze and light cream filling. …

Belleville / Melbourne CBD

Some of the greatest pleasures in the food scene are to be found in places you’ve probably overlooked. There’s a joy in finding your way to beautiful and unique places and feeling like you’re sharing in a secret with other diners. Belleville certainly has this allure for us. It sits above a bank on Swanston and Little Bourke, you’ll need to walk past and down the alley. When you see the X you’re in the right place, just make your way up the stairs!  It’s raw around the edges in the right sort of way. It’s a ramshackle sheek that means there’s always something to catch your eye.   We wandered through until we found a table we liked the look of, pondering the menu and heading to the bar to order. We were momentarily distracted by a person with a very well behaved dog waiting patiently at their feet but couldn’t be dissuaded from our task. The menu at Belleville is mainly about the rotisserie chicken, a fusion of American and Asian influence makes for an …

Hash / Hardware Lane

There’s a new hot spot in Hardware Lane! We’ve already been to Hardware Societie and our newer favourite Bowery to Williamsburg so we couldn’t resist a visit to Hash soon after they opened! It has a wicked fit out both inside and outside and the space is comfortable and appealing for a wide variety of diners. We spotted a mix of couples, families and groups all enjoying a weekend brunch.  The baristas were pretty badass too ✌🏻️, somehow the coffee tastes better when they have a bit of fun making it! Potentially an exaggeration, but hey, we love staff who love what they do.     We enjoyed the use of flasks as water bottles on our table but couldn’t help eyeing the next table’s hot chocolate concoction. The hot chocolate was served in a flask, poured over fairy floss in a flurry of theatre. We’ll admit to a bit of food envy – we’d already ordered single origin coffees by this point. We will be sure to return to give it a try another day.  We really …

The Grain Store / Melbourne CBD

Tucked away in a non-descript building on the South side of the CBD is the Grain Store. Inside you’ll find fine dining breakfasts that defy the simple exterior that houses them. The restaurant itself is clean and chic. It’s got the casual cool of exposed piping and vents with the sophistication of crisp whites and refined furnishings. The atmosphere was buzzing when we arrived but there were also a few people ahead of us in the queue for tables. There ended up being a short wait for a table, but we were surprised at how quick it ended up being. At least there was a table of pastries to drool over (not literally of course) while we waited. Our coffee orders were taken immediately. When they were served they had forgotten one, when we bought their attention to the error they were quick to bring it out. Fortunately we still had all our coffees before the food arrived. The coffee was quite nice, a sweet finish with a light acidity and creamy microfoam. Our first meal was …

Kit Kat Studio /Melbourne Central

I’ll forgive you for thinking all the buzz around Melbourne Central over the last weekend has been due to cosmetics giant Sephora. However for foodies and lovers of chocolate (basically everyone) there’s been something even bigger to get excited about, the opening of Kit Kat Studio! It’s a wondrous place filled with chocolate, toppings, more chocolate and a little bit of Christmas cheer.  At the back you’ll find chocolatiers, creating something delicious, just for you. But there’s also a range of ready made gift packs to pick up on the go. We arrived soon after opening and faced only a short wait to be let inside to make our custom orders. There’s a snazzy set up of terminals to customize everything about your Kit Kat. Starting with chocolate, there was white, milk and dark available. We opted for a classic milk chocolate base, before moving on to the toppings. The selection of extras is huge, making the decision agonizing. There’s so much on offer, such as brownie bits, nuts, fruits like raspberry, caramel… The list goes on! …
