Asado / Claremont

We spent a lot of time in Claremont before we moved and coming back we were delighted to discover Asado had opened in our absence. It’s a long and narrow venue, inviting you in with the allure of space and modern sheek decor.Β  Β  We went all the way through to the back for the intimacy of the lounge and the view to the garden. The cafe was empty when we arrived but people began to filter through soon after. The staff were initially attentive but seemed to forget about us tucked in the back corner.Β We eventually had to walki back to the front to get the attention of someone to get our order taken. Not the best start to our meal but we persevered.Β When our latte arrived it was hot but rich with a wonderfully fruity flavour. The table staff needed some work but we can’t fault their barista. When you’re offered the opportunity to have steak and chips you take it, the egg on it is really just for show… We knew this meal …

Brunch at the Brooklyn Lounge

We were so excited when the The Brooklyn Lounge opened and we checked them out for dinner on their opening weekend. Even better, they also have just started offering weekend brunches from 7-12 with a hangover special after 12. It was a chilly day but it was still nice to get some fresh air outside. The coffee was creamy and served at a good temperature, it was borderline over extracted but they just managed to save it. Our first dish was the pulled pork eggs benedict. The pork had been well seasoned and had a nice tomato flavour, it reminded us of the sliced beef benedict at Typika. Hollandaise, eggs and meat, one of those combinations that just work. The eggs were perfectly poached, though we would have liked the hollandaise to be a little thicker. We also tried the lemon curd and blueberry pancakes, just one of their flavour options. The flavours were sophisticated, we’re big fans of lemon curd and this was that great mix of tart and sweet. The coulis was lovely …

Brooklyn Lounge: New Opening in Claremont

On St Quentins Avenue where Madrid used to be you’ll find the Brooklyn lounge, the newest bar and restaurant in Claremont. They boast a very American menu, and a clientele of bearded, baseball capped hipsters that make you feel like you very well could be in a bar in Brooklyn. The music they were playing was very eclectic, a mix of old school hip hop, modern pop and some bar classics. The service was initially prompt and they were able to accommodate our request for a seat with a back despite being fairly busy. Out first drink to arrive was the Mos Def, it was supposed to be served with bacon but they had unfortunately sold out earlier in the day and hadn’t let us know when we ordered. It’s basically an old fashioned served with maple infused bacon, but without the bacon it was unrecognisable from any other. A good cocktail nonetheless. They forgot to bring our lemon lime and bitters along with it, but when they were alerted to it they fetched it …

Lemon Lane Claremont

Lemon Lane is located in Claremont, near the Quarter and tucked inside an alleyway filled with colourful street art. The coffee here was decent, a good flavour and creamy. However it was a bit hot and the foam could’ve been better. We ordered a banana smoothie to share. Its predominant favouring was banana and honey, with a hit of yogurt. It had nice flavours and was a good thickness, quite a nice smoothie on the whole. Our first dish was a natural yogurt, bircher museli with vanilla poached strawberries. The bircher museli was soft and beautifully sweetened with vanilla and the strawberry. This museli was unique with honey pistachio but clusters on top and the addition of grated apple and pumpkin seeds. A great healthy breakfast option. We also tried the bacon and egg flatbread. It was a solid meal, with good cheese and crispy bacon. The yolk of the egg was nice, but there was a touch of egg white that wasn’t quite cooked. This breakfast is also an example of the trend of …
