East Elevation / Brunswick East

I would wonder what’s behind the red door as I pass it each and every time. I’d heard whispers of a chocolatier, and others of coffee and meals to delight the senses. Not knowing which of the little birds to trust my only course of action was to check it out for myself. We arrived at 8.30am on the dot, when such places were said to open, and found it strangely quiet. Apparently Melbournians don’t brunch this early, or perhaps we had indeed stumbled upon the chocolatier. As it happens both little birds were correct, this was both home to Monsieur ย Truffle, chocolatier and East Elevation, a popular brunch spot. We’d clearly stumbled upon a combination ย dreams are ย made of. East Elevation is a nicely converted warehouse with a cafe on one side and chocolate making facilities on the other. It has high ceilings and a front window that light just floods through, the raw red brick walls giving it an edgy feel and just what you’d expect from a Brunswick East eatery. The staff …

F.A.T Fried and Tasty / Brunswick East

  The people behind the Two Little Pigs Chaceuterie and Grind bring us their new venture – fried chicken! Really with such a subject, how could you go wrong? F.A.T. stands for ‘fried and tasty’ but we were under no illusions that the food we were going to consume was anything other than fattening. F.A.T. is up the northern end of Lygon street, accessible by the 1 or 8 tram and easily visible on the corner of Lygon and Victoria streets.    It’s in a new building with a slick fit out, the walls are inspired by old school hip hop with a few chicken related puns thrown in for good measure. The ambience sits somewhere between a fast food chain and a hipster bar. We’d say it’s closer to a fast food chain by virtue of orders being placed at the counter and the menu sitting above it.  We ended up getting a table before wandering back to place orders.
