On our recent return to Perth we checked out the tiny little cafe, Flora and Fauna. When we say little we really do mean it, this cafe is seriously tiny with seating space located in the Northbirdge arcade.
Flora and Fauna is designed to be cute and charming it’s definitely achieved that. It’s the mismatched chairs, flowers and vintage decorations that have obviously be combined with care. But consider yourself warned, because there’s such a small amount of tables the staff are very vigilant in ensuring you’re sitting in the appropriate one. It can be a bit off putting, especially if you’re sitting at the right table but waiting for friends.
The menu at Flora and Fauna vegan and vegetarian, with mostly healthy and some sweet eats. You’ll need to place an order at the counter and your meal will be brought out to you.
We started with a light and fresh strawberry sunshine juice, and a decent but not otherwise particularly memorable latte. Our meals came soon after, and it was obvious they were designed to be infinitely instagrammable. The best of the selection was the Banana Bread, served with Nutella and fruit. It was a lovely big serving of banana bread, made in house and served with lots of fresh fruit. It was also incredibly beautiful on the plate, and certainly an example of what Flora and Fauna do very well: pretty, baked and fresh food.
Our second dish was the Pumpkin Smash, served with toast, salad and a side of eggs. Again it was a pretty dish, but at the expense of practicality with a savoury dish like this. We also weren’t impressed with the microwaved eggs served in a separate dish on the side. The serve of eggs is something people feel quite strongly about and something you need to get right if it’s going to be on the menu. The Smashed Pumpkin was a okay meal, but not as satisfying or complete as we would have liked – the savoury dishes just aren’t at the same standard as the sweet and we were quite disappointed.
Flora and Fauna have a good concept but the options they offer are very limited. We’d suggest you enjoy a table in the sunshine and stick with the sweet, fruity and easy options!
