Giddiup is a delightful little cafe in the heart of South Melbourne. It’s a stones throw from the markets and some of our other local favourites, Bibelot and Chez Dre. We loved the pastel fades in the exterior, and the clean and crisp interiors.
When we say ‘little’, we do mean little! It’s quite a narrow space with only a small area for diners to eat in, we were lucky to find a seat. We managed to get someone’s attention to order coffee and grab a menu. Giddiup do a beautiful coffee, smooth and creamy throughout. It was hot, but not too hot, sitting on the edge of that line that good baristas can tow. It’s one of the best for interesting and consistent coffee, making Giddiup a standout for the area.
Our first choice from the menu was a mint and pea smash, because bacon improves everything we added some. It was unfortunately a mistake, it wasn’t well cooked and felt dry and cold. Putting that aside, the dish was presented well, though a little hard to eat together. The light, freshness of the mint and pea, the poached eggs and toast were a perfect combination, and something we shouldn’t have meddled with.
We also chose a little more unusual sweet option, a chai and cinnamon spiced toast with coffee mascarpone. It was an absolutely delightful dish. It was light, and simple but very satisfying. You don’t need much to get the cinnamon and chai flavours and the creamy mascarpone just topped it off. If you’re looking for something sweet with a bit of a twist, this may just be the dish for you!
We would highly recommend Giddiup, their coffee is essential tasting in South Melbourne and they’ve got plenty of takeaway options if you’re on the run!
